The Revenant falls into the same category as Aronofsky’s “Requiem for a Dream” and Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List” for me, in the essence of being a terrific movie but not something I think I can sit through a second time. In all these movies there are brutal sequences that cause emotional stress and disgust just watching because it is so REAL and GRIPPING. To think that events in these movies actually happened or that they could very well happen is too much for me to think about. Not to say that I did not enjoy this film thoroughly.

The Revenant is a technical masterpiece that left me wondering “How the hell did they do that?” after many scenes and sequences. With beautiful cinematography and adroit camera movement this film is a visual magnum opus. It is apparent that the great minds that put forth this film are none other than the same ones that brought us Birdman: Lubezki and Inarritu. There are many long shots without cuts that are sprinkled throughout the film that add a sense of sophistication to it with the added bonus of predominantly location based shooting and natural lighting for the film , that can even make a novice film watcher raise an eyebrow at its complexity.

The camera work is not the only noteworthy aspect of the film; The actors did a superb job executing their rolls. Many are raving about DiCaprio’s performance but I was more of a fan of Hardy’s brutal and gritty character Fitzgerald. Granted, half the words that came out of his mouth were unintelligible but he left no doubt in my mind that he was fully devoted to his role and bringing Fitzgerald alive instead of just Hardy playing a character named Fitzgerald. He was simply amazing.

With all this said, there are still flaws in the film. At some points it was dragging on and moving too slow. It gave the impression that the film itself was cocky and wanted to show off all of its beautiful scenery and camera work too much. Then there was the “he shouldn’t be alive” situations. Hugh Glass was a real guy that really did survive a bear mauling but in the film they make this guy practically immortal. There were too many instances where I was thinking “he should be dead three times over right now, for me to enjoy the film as much I should have.

I am a big fan of the OT, and like many fans was disappointed by the silly prequels. I felt excited for this new trilogy, and hoped JJ Abrams was going to be able to give us new stories to propel the series forward. After the prequels, at least there was the hope of someone new coming in and renewing the sense of magic and wonder that have been the very soul of the OT. Now this hope has been extinguished. Disney has put so much effort into safely making money (a lot of it, too), from the cash cow that is Star Wars, that they have stifled any creativity that could have made this movie great.

Let me say this, this movie was hilarious. Reading reviews will have you thinking to not go see this movie but I’m glad I did. It’s a comedy it’s supposed to make you laugh. It may not have a storyline especially with a comedy. And I think that people who don’t find movies like this funny is dry , boring and has no sense of humor. Some people are just too serious. Loosen up.

Anyways If you like to laugh and looking for a fun movie. Go see this movie. If you want to be serious stay home.

It’s good to see tika sumpter in this role because I’m used to seeing her in Tyler perry have and the have nots where she plays a con artist so I found myself calling her Candace the whole time

Anywho I Cube and harts chemistry . They remind me of real best friends

Nowadays people seem to be running out of ideas for making comedy movies. I had a little hope given the cast, but it was nothing special.

How many times have we seen the same elements in movies? Having second thoughts after getting engaged to a controlling fiancée, a grandpa who just lost his wife, taking a road trip, meeting an old acquaintance, a shady drug dealer, having a drug and alcohol filled night with shameful acts, two (supposedly) funny cops, unnecessary expletives and bad puns, the list just goes on.

The performances were not stellar either. The movie was pretty forgetful and not funny (a few chuckle worthy moments but that’s about it). It’s a shame really, that an actor like Robert De Niro is choosing such movies.

When you’re crazy, do you know you’re crazy? It’s a question I’ve heard asked in movies and in real life, but it is quite the poser (at least for those of us who are not crazy… as far as we know). In other words, when you’re doing things that other people would call “crazy”, at what point do you move from “eccentric”, or even “weird”, to genuinely, certifiably… using the clinical term… “bat-sh** crazy”? These are some of the questions you’ll be asking about more than one character in the horror thriller “The Boy” (PG-13, 1:37). But you’ll soon find out that insanity is only one possible explanation for the unusual behavior of various characters and the many strange happenings throughout this very entertaining film.

Greta Evans (Lauren Cohan) is a young Montana woman (around 30) who is restarting her life. To escape an abusive relationship with her former boyfriend, Cole (Ben Robson), she doesn’t just leave him – she leaves the country. Greta gets hired as a nanny (a job she’s never done before) by the wealthy Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire (Jim Norton and Diana Hardcastle), an eccentric older couple living in a big, isolated house in the English countryside. Unusual stuff, but things definitely move to weird-slash-creepy when Greta first sets eyes on her young charge. The “boy” that Greta is supposed to care for turns out to be a marionette-like porcelain doll. Greta thinks it’s all a joke, but the Heelshires aren’t laughing. They lost their son, Brahms (Jett Klyne), in a house fire on the boy’s 8th birthday. They coped with their loss by starting to care for a doll which looks like their son and is about the size of an 8-year-old boy. They’ve been calling this doll “Brahms” and treating him like a real boy for about 20 years. Now, it’s Greta’s turn.

After giving Greta detailed instructions regarding Brahms’ care and leaving her with a clipboard containing a list of ten rules (and whispering a cryptic “I’m very sorry” as they head out the door), the Heelshires drive away for their first vacation in “a very long time.” Greta is now alone with Brahms in that big wireless-less house. Her only contacts with the outside world are her friend, Sandy (Stephanie Lemelin), whom Greta calls regularly from an old rotary-dial phone, and Malcolm (Rupert Evans), the handsome young local man who delivers groceries and brings mail to the house about once a week.

At first, Greta treats the doll as most of us would, tossing it aside and ignoring it. But the longer Greta ignores that list, the more strange things begin to happen in that house. Her clothes disappear. She gets locked in the attic. She finds a mess in Brahms’ bedroom. She starts to hear noises and see shadows. Greta is creeped out and begins having scary nightmares about Brahms. Then, the doll starts showing up in places other than where Greta left him. When she calls Malcolm over to witness all this, and he sees that Greta is now treating the doll as if he’s real, Malcolm starts to treat her as if she’s… bat-sh** crazy.

“The Boy” is very well-directed and pretty original. William Brent Bell (who also helmed 2012’s “The Devil Inside”) masters the slow build, making us wonder throughout the film who’s crazy and who’s not, as he gives us a few good gotcha-type scares along the way. His cast is better than in many horror flicks and they keep us interested during the times that not much happens. Stacey Menear’s script keeps us guessing and then brings everything together in a mind-blowing twist that few will see coming and which shocks, without resorting to cheap tricks. This film skillfully blends some elements of earlier horror movies like “The Shining” (1980), “Child’s Play” (1988) and “The Others” (2001), but has a fresh and even more modern feel to it. All aspects of this fun and exciting horror thriller are on target – from its creativity, to more technical aspects, such as its set, camera work, visuals and editing. Missing this movie, or letting anyone tell you the ending before you see it for yourself, would be… kinda crazy. “A”

How many of these young adult fiction books are there? Over the past few years we’ve had a plethora of books made into movies like The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, Divergent and Twilight along with their sequels. As long as they make money at the box office, Hollywood shall continue to make them. Another adaptation in the long line of young adult fiction is The 5th Wave which starts off promisingly but then becomes another generic teenage film with a romance subplot and unconvincing action scenes.

Cassie Sullivan (Chloe Grace Moretz) is just a normal teenage girl living happily in Ohio with her father (Ron Livingston), mother (Maggie Siff) and brother, Sam (Zackary Arthur). Their lives change when aliens invade Earth. The aliens inflict wave after wave of attack: the 1st wave refers to electromagnetic pulses being disabled resulting in a loss of communication and transportation; the 2nd wave is a flurry of natural disasters; the 3rd wave is an airborne deadly virus transmitted by birds; the 4th wave is the alien species inhabiting humans like parasites; the 5th wave is alien domination. The adults are separated from the children and the US army led by Colonel Vosch (Liev Schreiber) is taking control of the situation, placing children in quarantine so they can assist in fighting the alien species. Cassie finds herself isolated from her peers and must fight her own battles.

The plot is tense and exciting but that’s just for the first half an hour. Once the children have been separated from the adults, things become a bit stale. It doesn’t help when there’s sizable plot holes throughout the movie. The story then drifts off into a romantic subplot which was just as boring as the Twilight series. When the children are trained to fight the aliens, there’s a sense that all excitement has dissipated. If the focus was on Cassie fighting her own battles and trying to find her brother then it would have made for a more exciting movie.

The director is J Blakeson and this is his second directorial effort after The Disappearance of Alice Creed in 2009. It might be another seven years until he is employed again for he has some learning to do. Some of those close-up shots of the actors with their foreheads not in the frame were annoying and several of the fight scenes were difficult to see as they were filmed in natural lighting at night!

Chloe Grace Moretz is developing into a terrific actress if she hasn’t reached that level already. She is convincing as the teenager who must make her own decisions when her family is no longer around to support her. The two actors who play her love interests, Nick Robinson and Alex Roe, are both devilishly handsome but their roles could be played by any young, unknown Hollywood heartthrob. Liev Schreiber adds integrity to the production and can always be relied upon to hold the fort in the acting stakes.

There are quite a few clever ideas in this film but the execution could have been much better. If you’re a fan of young adult fiction, you won’t be too disappointed but for people who have seen many movies, there’s nothing new which will cause you to leap for joy. The story sticks pretty much to the generic formula and doesn’t reach any great heights. http://mlaimlai2.wix.com/magical-movie-review

True Heroes

The overall experience of the World Premiere was incredible, but this Movie in any venue would be worth the price of admission.

Like most, I’ve seen hoards of “Action Movies”, but the compressed time line and episodic nature of this one puts you into a pressure cooker that leaves you drained at the end. Probably more firepower per minute than in any true life account ever shown on the Big Screen.

In the final moments, though, you realize just how much these men lost. Few if any other team of six would have survived such relentless and massive assaults. But more than anything, it will force you to ask yourself why our government literally left these men and the people they saved, to die.

“Daddy’s Home” was a very enjoyable movie to watch! The mix of polar opposites Will Ferrell and Mark Walhberg was almost perfect. Ferrell plays the wimpy, goody two-shoes husband who is desperately trying to keep his wife and step-kids together as a family. Wahlberg plays the charismatic and tough guy ex-husband/biological father looking to win back his family at almost any cost. The beautiful Linda Cardellini plays Sara the wife/ex-wife who is caught in the hilarious tug of war between her two suitors. While the plot is somewhat predictable, the humor is fresh and so very enjoyable! If you’re looking for an hour and a half of laughs, look no further and go see this enjoyable movie. However, you might want to leave the younger kids at home for this one because of sexual innuendo and language.

He believes that the US housing market is built on a bubble that will burst within the next few years. Autonomy within the company allows Burry to do largely as he pleases, so Burry proceeds to bet against the housing market with the banks, who are more than happy to accept his proposal for something that has never happened in American history. The banks believe that Burry is a crackpot and therefore are confident in that they will win the deal. Jared Vennett with Deutschebank gets wind of what Burry is doing and, as an investor believes he too can cash in on Burry’s beliefs. It has a lot of technical terms and jargon from the world of economics and despite the obvious effort to explain things (including breaking the 4th wall (i.e. talking direct to the audience while looking into the camera), and cameo appearances from movies stars like Margot Robbie and Selina Gomez) you will probably fail to understand in depth the mechanics of what is happening.

The world of banks, funds, bonds, financing and the stock market will remain a mystery for most of the viewers.

Big names of Hollywood star in the Big Short including Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and others. They play real persons, who had an insight on the global economic crisis we probably still experiencing.

As a movie it has its own style. Something of a documentary, a comedy sometimes, but essentially a drama since the crisis cost 8 million people their job and their homes.

People who are impressed easily might tell you this is a “masterpiece”. Believe me it isn’t. But I recommend to see it. Even better at home where you can pause or rewind the movie to understand better. It is lengthy (130min) but you won’t get bored. It needs some patience though especially in the beginning and not to be disappointed when terms like CDO, payouts etc. are starting to emerge.
